Faith Pierce's horror debut brings a real nightmare to life

Author Faith Pierce never wanted to work in horror. But after experiencing a recurring nightmare that she couldn’t get out of her head, she decided to turn it into a short story. That story evolved over the years into “The Face You Wear,” her debut novel, set to be released on Aug. 12 through Crystal Lake Publishing. Here's a look at what's in store:


Jana overcame a bleak, poverty-stricken childhood to achieve her version of the American dream. She has her own home, a successful career, and a new husband who offers everything she hoped for in a normal life.

Her tight grasp on stability however begins to slip with disturbing dreams about her husband Michael. A figure in the bedroom doorway watching her sleep, night-time conversations Michael claims never happened, someone lying beside her at night when Michael later says he wasn't there.

Old anxieties and paranoia begin to surface as Jana becomes increasingly desperate to discover if the true threat is her mind, her husband…or something darker.


Pretty terrifying, isn't it? Faith and I spend time with the nightmare itself and how she built on this to become a complete story. We look at Jana and Michael, how the two play off one another and the ways they react to the building tension. We talk editing and how this changed the story and the all-important question—will there be more?

Ariane Torres blends feminism, domestic space, and women’s invisibility in debut novel

Mark those calendars for March 1st, because Somerville-based author Ariane Torres has some big news to share! Her debut book, “We Are The Kings,” is set to release through Bold Story Press.

The story centers around Marcella as she grieves the death of her grandmother, unearths family secrets, and refuses to settle for a predictable life or a boring man. While Marcella is sifting through her family’s conflicting and fading memories, she puts into words what no one else will say out loud, revealing not only what may or may not have happened, but what is truly at stake when a woman tells her story.

In this interview Ariane and I talk about Marcella, her role in the story and the personal traits that she shares with people in the author's life. We look at the different themes and how they're explored in the book as well as why Ariane wanted to include them.

Ariane's background includes majoring in Russian Studies and English Literature and graduate work in prison architecture and aging in prison. These played a role in the book and its writing and we talk about how it happened.

Author David Rohlfing shares his killer thinking in debut novel

In this episode, David Rohlfing talks about the writing process for his debut novel, “Deliberate Duplicity.” Originally at nearly 200,000 words, a heavy editing process gave Rohlfing a lot of writing lessons, mainly on how much detail is enough.



This novel explores the twisted, vengeful mind of a serial killer, and follows the dedicated detective, Sasha Frank, who’s hell-bent on solving the mystery behind a string of gruesome crimes. Rohlfing talks about what makes a good villain for this kind of book, as well as the story behind the main character.
