Joy and the Apocalypse

A couple weeks back we interviewed Ryan Convery from Fat Foot Films and Dan Black from Rock Your Head Productions about their newest film, Joy and the Apocalypse, a film about the end of the world that has nothing to do with the survivors. Last week, myself, Sarah and Rumel watched the movie. Let's just say if the world really was ending that night, watching JATA isn't the worst way to go. You can check out the trailer here.

From the opening shots, you can tell this film is high quality. The camera work is first-rate, and the sound very crisp and clear. The story takes place with the end of the world right around the corner. Or a few months away, depending on which religious whack job you ask. Benjamin Dover (yep, take a second and get a good laugh from that one), played by Reza Breakstone, has been commissioned by his fiance Linda (Katie Dickinson) to design a church which will be built after the apocalypse. However, when he runs into his ex-girlfriend Joy (Vanessa Leigh), he finds himself questioning his goals, and more importantly, his decisions. Like his choice of a last name. Not the best idea he ever had.

This film takes a completely unexpected turn, while still keeping to the theme of our identity and the choices we make. To me, the film's all about how we define ourselves and the difficulty of breaking out of those roles, given the consequences.

The film takes place in Boston, and we get to see plenty of local landmarks, like the Charles River (home of the world's first six-eyed frog) and Boston Common.

The acting in this film was second-to-none. Breakstone comes across as a man torn by who he's made himself into. While he seems committed to his task of designing the first post-apocalyptic house of worship (as opposed to a house of pancakes, equally important for the survivors), we see how unsure he is. Hell, the guy spends all his free time sketching portraits of Joy. Kind of a sign he's got a few unresolved issues.

Leigh's a laugh riot as Joy, a woman whose oars are nowhere near the water. She's less than thrilled with how things ended between them, and starts stalking Ben as a result. Dickinson plays the role of the controlling, snot-nosed rich brat to perfection. She seems to be the antithesis of Joy, at least in part, and orders Ben around with impunity.

There were really no weaknesses from the remainder of the cast (Ed Gutierrez, Tom Wolfson and Fiore Leo. They all brought their A-game to the table, and big props to the crew for making this production look so damn good.

JATA is the kind of film you need to watch a few times to get all the different themes and story twists, but trust me when I say it's worth it. Even if the world ends.

This concept concert, featuring local performers Sarah Blacker , Danielle Miraglia , Autumn Hollow Band , James Houlahan, Patrick Coman and Garlic & Moonshine, is the second of For the Sake of the Song’s semi-annual charity showcase.

Following the success of For the Sake of the Song’s inaugural Blood on the Tracks performance—which raised money for the New England chapter of the National MS Society–founder Patrick Coman realized the opportunity to give back to the local community while raising the profile of Boston’s burgeoning Americana scene. “Musicians don’t always have much to give in terms of money, but artists here are really eager to use their abilities to support a good cause. I knew that we’d have to make these events a regular thing because not only are they a blast, but there are just so many great local organizations that we’d love to support,” says Coman.

The beneficiary of choice, Music Drives Us, supplies grants for music programming to affect positive change for people in need. The foundation seeks out organizations and individuals that use music as a tool for all segments of society and for all age groups.

Citywide Blackout moves to UNregular Radio

After two years on CyberStationUSA, Citywide Blackout has moved to a new home, UNRegular Radio. This locally owned and operated station features a variety of programming, including The Boston Local Music Show, I'm Just Sayin' The Early Show and The Dating Marketplace, with a strong, Boston-based audience. Producers and hosts Max Bowen and Rumel Mahmood went through a long process before decided to move the show to this station.

With this new location comes a whole new look for the show. For the past two years, Citywide Blackout has featured a wide array of Boston-based musicians. Now, that lens has been widened to include local entertainment, including movies, comedy and much, much more.

During the first episode, Bowen and Mahmood spoke to the organizers of Queer Women in Music, the cast and crew of the hit dark comedy The Joneses and the band Brief Awakening. Expect much more on Citywide Blackout, which now airs live every Saturday from 6-8 p.m.

New England Americana Festival 2011 recap

Three days later and I’m still reeling from the awesomeness that was this year’s New England Americana Festival (yes, I said awesomness, I’m the head writer).

This year’s fest showcased 35 Americana performers from all over, some familiar faces, and others that are new to this great organization. For three days (March 31-April 2) bands like John Colvert and the Great Brighton Fire, Highway Ghosts, Treat Her Right and The Rationales played to a packed house at Church. The fans showed their love each day, not leaving until the last set was done.

The NEAF got it’s start last year at the same club with a similarly-packed festival. Since then, founders John Colvert and Noel Coakley have been hard at work giving the local Americana scene a place to call home, and the opportunity to network with other musicians. Along with the fests, they also help put together smaller shows throughout the year under the NEAF banner, showing one and all that this is a movement that is here to stay.

I was only able to catch two out of the three days, but the bands I saw blew me away. Check out the 250+ photos I've got on the Citywide Blackout Facebook page. It’d take me forever and a day to reap all the action, so here are just a few of the highlights:

John Colvert and the Great Brighton Fire: It’s my hope that the work Colvert and Coakley have done in bringing the city’s Americana artists together will hopefully resonate for years to come. He played a power-packed and soulful set, and towards the end, Jeff Byrd (Jeff Byrd and the Dirty Finch), Coakley, Dave Deluca (Highway Ghosts) and Jason Basiner (This Way) took the stage for an all-star song.

The Rationales: I first heard this band at last year’s NEAF, so I was happy to see they were making a second appearance. David Mirabella’s got great stage presence, and the band brings a classic rock with a dose of country to the night.

Sarah Blacker and Abbie Barrett: I don’t want to be cliché and call these two a dynamic duo, but there are two of them, their style is dynamic, so hey, it fits. Run with it. The audience was packed for this set, as Blacker and Barrett demonstrated their wide vocal range and ability. They aren’t just playing the music, these two are living it. During the set, they covered “Banks of the Ohio,” a 19^th century ballad about murder, prompting Sarah to joke that more than a few of their songs are about death. I'll take a few steps back, just to be on the safe side.

Big East: One of the last acts of Saturday night, these guys brought a boatload of energy to the somewhat inebriated audience. Lead singer Jeff Vachon was barely contained during the set, and the intensity of this blues/rock fivesome was impossible to ignore.

This Way: Headed by Basiner, this band has a whole new look, lineup and style. Simply put, they ripped the club apart during their set. Every member of the band moved to the music, and crowd quickly followed suit. I’ll be damned if I miss their CD release show on May 14.

Dennis Brennan: An familiar face in the local scene, this guys plays with all the chops of a seasoned veteran. The music is a mix of all the best ingredients of country and rock, and though his set came a little late in the evening, even the T-bound audience stayed put.

A new look at Boston’s music history

For those familiar with bands like Uh Huh Her, the So and Sos and Catie Curtis, a new organization has come together to give a new voice to these musicians.

From photography exhibitions to shows around Boston, the Queer Women in Music (QWIMB) movement has the city’s female musicians front and center. Run by Tina Lafleur, QWIMB wears more than a few hats. The recent Queer Bonanza at T.T. The Bear’s Place in early February drew a solid crowd with five different acts (Betty Widerski, Jordan Clements, Brief Awakening, Roni Pillischer and Happy Little Clouds), and more is planned in the near future.

“There have always been queer institutions, with the universities,” said Lafleur. “This is definitely a place that attracts music.”

Lafleur burns the rest her midnight oil researching other musicians either from the city or who have played there from the 1970s and on, and in doing so contributed to this aspect of the city’s music.

“It’s mostly been word of mouth,” said Lafleur, referring to how news of QWIMB has spread.

A volunteer with the History Project, Lafleur is focused on putting together an exhibit for the QWIMB movement, with long-term plans of guest speakers and a book on the subject. Lafleur a former employee at Newbury Comics, she’s been exposed to music of all kinds and said the connections there have helped her learn of other performers She also hopes to work with the city’s gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender organizations, adding that the response to the T.T.’s show and her work have far exceeded her expectations.

“I didn’t realize the bands were here,” Lafleur said, adding that many have responded to her requests for photos and information.

Lafleur has started a Facebook page for QWIMB, and some musicians involved have posted photos, videos and links.

The History Project’s recent work focuses on the history of same-sex marriage’s struggle in Massachusetts and the history of Boston’s Pride celebration. It recently launches Above and Beyond, an exihibit documenting the triumphs and tragedies of those committed to fighting against HIV and AIDS.

It's one thing to hear your band's tunes on local or national radio, but knowing your music's going to be seen on the small screen is a whole new level of cool.

Americana band Jeff Byrd and the Dirty Finch can add a new notch to their belts with the news that their song "Probably Maybe" is currently being used in the Clear on Calories campaign commercial. It's a nationally televised commercial that has been airing on networks like CNN and others nationwide.

Blacker is back!

I've been a huge fan of Sarah Blacker's tunes for some time, so it's with great excitement and anticipation that I unveil the news of her new album release, "Come What May." I got the chance to listen to a few of her tunes, which you can check out via her web site.

Sarah's music has a relaxing power to it. You crank up the volume and let your mind float away on the melodies. The title track, "Come What May," is a perfect example of this. The music is gentle, and Sarah's voice takes a casual stroll through your mind, inviting you to drop whatever's got you twisted up inside and kick back for a few.

"Knocked The Winds" and "When I Was New" picks up the pace, showing that Blacker's got more than one musical gear at her disposal. Do yourself a favor and pick up her first album, "The Only Way Out Is Through."

And if this amazing tuneage wasn't enough, Sarah's also delving into the world of video, with one for her song "Driven," which you can check out here.

Sarah's been on several tours, and her accomplishments proves her skill time and again. This info comes from a press release sent by her manager, Roni Pillischer.

Her song 'Smell of Caramel,' off of 'TOWOiT,' was recently signed by Black Cloud Promotions for licensing in TV and movies, and it also garnered her the recent win in the Subaru competition. She was one of my top picks for my top 10 Artists of 2009 in the Noise Magazine. She was the number two artist of WMVY's [Martha's Vineyard] Unchartered Waters Series.

Blacker was the recent winner of Radio 92.9/Boch Subaru's artist competition, and became the voice and face of Subaru of New England's "Ooh, ooh it's love," TV and radio campaign airing throughout New England and the mid-atlantic region for several months this fall/winter.

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

3 Day Threshold ships out to The Middle East (not the club)

Winner of “Best Local Band” in this year’s Boston Magazine, Cambridge’s own bluegrass and country music band, Three Day Threshold has been invited to do a tour of The Middle East (not the club in Cambridge, but the actual Middle East!) in February 2011.

“We are so humbled and honored by this opportunity and extremely grateful for a chance to give back to the troops who have done so much for our country” says banjo and guitarist, Kier Byrnes.

Though the official tour stops are classified, regions the band will be in include Djibouti, Qatar and Kuwait and a possible off shore concert.The band will celebrate with a tour kickoff party January 29th at one of their favorite local oases, Atwood’s Tavern, in Cambridge MA, before they fly to desert sands of The Middle East. Admission is free, 21+ and the show is from 10pm-1am.

Only at Night-Keyboard headbangin'

Ever get the urge to floor punch whilst listening to a keyboard player? Five minutes with the tunes of Only at Night, and that'll change, trust me.
The music of this Outer Space-based quartet is deceptively powerful. None have a particularly imposing presence, and their easygoing natures seem out of place with a band capable of getting even the most dedicated wallflower to move their asses. But once they hit the stage all bets are off as they rock from the opening note to the closing riff.
Vocalist and keyboard player Stefano Trafecante isn't just the bane of spellcheck-he's a surgeon on the keyboard. Okay, more like a surgeon with a Norse war hammer. He pounds the ivories, evoking a completely different response than most keyboard enthusiasts. At the band's most recent show at All Asia, the crowd was jumping , which was pounded out by Trefecante and slammed home by the accomplished trio of Danielle Leveille on guitar, JC on drums and Rilla Bailey on bass.
The music of Only at Night blends the smooth synthesis of Trafecante's voice and keyboard playing with the follow-up assault of Bailey, JC and Leveille's instrumental skills. In songs like "Save the World" a quiet, mellow opening soon gives way to a far more powerful second verse. Live, the band gets lost in the music, and the crowd soon follows suit. Metaphorically, they're like a dancer in the Bolshoi Ballet on a speeding bullet train loaded with 200 kilos of Semtex headed for a brick wall. In fact, I think that's how they got to the All Asia show.

The New Year isn't even here, but we've already got three shows ready to go!

Start the new year off right with two newcomers, The Fifth Minute and Less than Three and my old friends from Only at Night.

Sure to become an annual shindig, Boston Twangefied hits the stage at Precinct with great bands like the Brooklyns and Asa Brebner, plus prizes and special guests!

No flyer as if now, but the show is definitely worth the price of admission! Sierra and Andrew, Whispering Tree and Hadrian's Heroes hit the stage at Church. Check out the listing here.

The Noise celebrates 30 years

I'm a more recent reader of the Noise, but I've come to respect it as THE source for all the local music news. They've got a slew of well-written articles by folks in the know, articles written for anyone and everyone. You don't need to be a Berklee grad to understand what they're talking about. Whether you're a diehard music fan or just a casual listener, this mag's got something for everyone.

The Noise also has tons of show and CD reviews, and anyone can be a writer. If you've got a love for the local scene, just put pen to paper and pass along your thoughts on some of the shows or bands in town.

Rita and Lolita are a section that's not to be missed. These two pose some pretty cool questions to musicians of all kinds, and keep us up to date on what's happening.

InAeona, The Battleships Cometh, A Wish for Fire and Protean Collective

One of the best shows of 2010, without a doubt! The metal band InAeona made for a strong opening with a great light display during their set. The music's heavy, but blends a variety of sounds to make this trio stand out in a big way. Lead singer Bridge's lyrics matched the instruments shot for shot, never backing down for a moment.

The Battleships Cometh....well, they lack definition, but that's not a bad thing at all. With songs like "Kata of the Man Bear," this rock quartet sticks in your mind in the best way possible-by sounding like nothing you've heard before. Lead singer Leilani gets in the audience's face and dares them to wander back to the bar. I noticed few in the crowd taking the challenge.

A Wish for Fire kept the momentum going with an intense set. Great vocals combined with pulsing instrumentation caught the audience and held them fast-suffice to say, their CD has been added to my collection. The crowd responded in a huge way, and I can see how they've played a sold-out show at the Middle East.

I've reviewed the onstage antics of Protean Collective more times than I can say-literally! This was their last show of the year and the beginning of a break for the band as they work on new material. They played a couple new songs, and if this is any indication of what's coming up, I'll be first in line for the new CD.

One of my favorite bands, StilRize, has just accomplished something huge! Recently, the band was signed to a seven-album contract with Roadrunner Records. Here's the article, written by yours truly for his day job at the Billerica Minuteman.

StilRize signs seven-album contract with Roadrunner Records

In the span of five years, local band StilRize has achieved some memorable milestones, playing alongside such well-known musicians as Papa Roach and Three Doors Down.

Now the band can add one more notch to their belts—inking a multi-album contract with Roadrunner Records, home of bands like Fear Factory and Nickleback.

StilRize consists of Travis and Andrew Deprey and Michael Ciardi of Billerica and Sean Timmins and his brother Dan from Lexington. Managers Steve Brega and Travis Deprey are also from Billerica.

The deal with Roadrunner got its start last Thanksgiving, when the band played to a packed audience at the club Church in Boston’s Fenway area. The music was submitted to the web site www.signmetoroadrunner.com, where it received considerable attention from fans, as well as Ron Berman, senior vice president of A&R for Roadrunner. Berman was in attendance at the show at Church, and two weeks later, contacted the band about signing with the label.

Currently, Andrew and Sean are in Nashville writing songs for the first album, slated to be released next summer. A tour of the U.S. and Europe is soon to follow. Among some of the people the band is working with are Skidd Mills, who has written music for Saving Abel, Skillet and 12 Stones, guitarist Brian Craddock of Daughtry and Andy Waldeck of Stone Temple Pilots.

Q Your band has been signed to a seven-album deal with Roadrunner Records. Is there any schedule you have to keep for releasing your music?

A Yes there is. We got into a stipulation, when we write the songs, it (the album) had to be released within a year, no matter what. There are some bands that are on labels and they just shelve their albums when they’re done. The timeframe in terms of the first album out, we didn’t get that in writing. Ron Berman, our guy, said by next summer we plan to have this album released and touring.

Q Was it always in the plan to get signed to a label like Roadrunner?

A The goal was just to be signed, we didn’t know who or anything, you know? We want to be signed, we want to be pushed by some big people and get out worldwide, ‘cause we knew this was the only way we could do this.

We’re still working, writing lyrics. It’s going to be insane. The last time we went to Nashville, we wrote with all these guys, write with one for four hours, then go to someone else and do it again.

Q Do you feel like you’re under more pressure to produce quality music than before?

A It’s pressure as in you got to try and write a hit every single time. Our guy Ron Berman thinks we’re capable of this and he’s expecting that. That right there is a big guy to look up to. It gets a little bit pressuring.

Local fans can expect a diverse range of sounds. They’re heard just soft and hard sounds from us. We’re going be having all sorts of influences, people coming in from two bands, Evanescence and Daughtry, and Nickleback’s producer all coming in. They’ll be co-writing with us.

Q How do you decide what goes into the album and what gets tossed?

A I always live by this quote, every song and lyric I write is like my children, I don’t pick a favorite. You’re going to paint a picture, you paint a thousand of them, you don’t pick a favorite because you like it, you create it and you love everything you do.

Q Will some songs be shelved for future use?

A I think it will be, some songs you shelve and when the right time comes you’ll release it.

Q Any details on the upcoming tour?

A They’re (Roadrunner) looking at Europe and America for us. We haven’t toured, we’ve just gone on trips. A trip to Michigan for a week to play with 3 Doors Down, and a year ago we did a trip to play with Papa Roach. We’ve gone to Rhode Island, Florida and New York to do radio performances, but it’s never been nonstop touring, show after show, which is what we’ve been dying to do. It’s in our blood, but we’ve never been able to do it, or had the funds to do it.

Q Some bands prefer to follow the “Do it Yourself” method, rather than relying on a label. Your thoughts?

My thoughts on DIY are completely go for it and let’s do it ourselves, but it got to the point where it literally comes down to money. Someone has to be rich in your family or someone has to invest in you to go out on a tour. A label can throw out millions of dollars, you need funds to do it. As for DIY, I was all for it, until it got to the point where you can’t afford it. My advice is if the bands have the funds to do it themselves, do it.

D-Fect-Nothing broken about it

Okay, let me cut right to the chase here and give you the final verdict on the music of D-Fect. Get. It. Now.

This hip-hop artist brings some tight flows, clever word use and catchy beats to his self-titled debut album. D-Fect prides himself on being a self-made man, doing all his own writing and recording, with help from some of his closest friends. Scoffing the current hip-hop trends, D-Fect goes for the jugular in this CD, with lines like "You really think I need help selling these bomb tracks/So I can walk up into label offices and start pissing on contracts." The man knows he's got talent, and what's more, doesn't ask for or need help from labels to make his career a reality.

D-Fect keeps the rhyming to a moderate pace, enough for the listener to follow, but not so slow that you might mistake his work for some easy-listening jam. The tone is solid and passionate, and whether it's a crowd of 200 or 2, he brings the same level of professionalism to the table. Along with taking a few potshots at the mainstream styles, Nicastro's beats speak to his own dedication, working his 9-5 like the rest of us, and spending the rest of the day working on new music. Local guests Joey Werra, Cloud 9 and Rated R make an appearance on the album.

Without a doubt the most memorable of the tracks is "Mayberry the Muffin Man," a tune about a morbidly obese man who eventually dies after overdosing on chocolate. It's weird, off-beat, but well put-together, and reminds me a lot of the Insane Clown Posse's brand of way left-of-center lyrics. All in all, a solid debut for this local performer.

Holy, and shit. In that order. Gram National 2010 was an amazing two days of some the best music I've heard in a long time. From local acts like Jeff Byrd and the Dirty Finch to national performers like Lydia Loveless, the bill sported some amazing musicians! In between sets Dave DeLuca of the Highway Ghosts took the stage to talk about the Gram Parsons Petition, a nationwide initiative to get Gram Parsons inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Why he isn't in there already is a mystery to me, but hopefully this event pushes that one step further towards completion. Great news from Three Day Threshold

Hey all, as the title implies, news of some greatness from our friends at Three Day Threshold. This is from an e-mail they sent.

Three Day Threshold won Boston Magazine’s award for “Best Local Band”, as listed in the October issue of Boston Magazine. This is thanks to YOU and we are very pleased for your help and that you enjoy coming out to see us play.

I was sadly unable to attend the awards show, as I was down in the Caribbean working on a project. On the bright side, I did get to meet some of Trinidad and Tobago’s top officials including the Commander of the Coast Guard, the senior ranking governors of Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Patrick Manning as well as other assorted members of Parliament. Now, I’m just crossing my fingers, hoping there’s no international incidents when all of those important Trinidad officials listen to track two on Straight Out Of The Barrel. I guess that we shall see.

Anyhow, thanks for supporting our band. We really couldn’t do it without you. Thanks a million,

Citywide Show Report-Battle Cry Highway, The Bozo Nightmare, Gambiza

Let's face it-Sundays suck. As the day preceding the dreaded work week, they're the ones where we get the least accomplished, and usually call it way before we should.

But this need not be so if you were lucky enough to be at the All Asia on the 24th, where a show of riotous proportions was held! Okay, so there were no riots, but we had a damned good time!

Battle Cry Highway, a band I got hooked up with via the magic of Facebook postings, brought their stellar rock sound to the show. These guys have an old school style, straight up rock & roll the way it was meant to be. Front man Kevin Graham has some great chops on the mic, and his tuning talk was hilarious! This Waltham-based trio is new to the Boston area, but expect big things as they continue to play out.

The Bozo Nightmare is one of those occurrences that defies description. Johnny Rev has a style all his own, and his techno-laced songs about Colorado City and some shitty relationships are the kind you want to pay attention to. He's got great confidence on stage, and you can tell from the music that this is a guy who's done some serious living.

So what do you get when you cross cheese, shiny pants and Super Baby Bunnies? No idea? Me neither. Wait, I do, it's Gambiza! A theatrical quartet that dons bunny ears, throws out slices of cheese, and generally fills the room with epic music, these guys don't command respect, they rip it out of you! Frontwoman Rachel Gambiza is barely contained when she takes the stage. Forget mournful tunes about loves lost, these guys are rocking out with super-powered rabbits! Doesn't get any better!

Autumn Hollow CD release show

This Saturday will be a show to remembered. The Autumn Hollow Band is holding a CD release party for their new album, Love Letters and Ransom Notes. You can download or listen to the tunes here.

You might remember band member Noel Coakley from my broadcasts from the New England Americana Festival over the summer. Those broadcasts can be found here, and here .

I'll throw up a full review after the show, but here's the lineup. The show kicks off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Rosebud Diner at 381 Summer St. in Somerville. Capacity is limited and the crowd is expected to be big, so come early!

The Autumn Hollow Band consists of Brendan Murphy (lead vocals, guitar), Todd Sampson (drums), Scott Marucci (bass, vocals), Mike Burke (lead guitar, vocals), and Noel Coakley (pedal steel, ukulele, banjo, vocals).

November shows-tunes before turkey!

Before you head for those turkey legs and various states of spuds, we've got three awesome shows to check out. All are at the All Asia.

First, we've got an insane metal night for you on Nov. 7, from 9-midnight. Hangover Black leads the charge, with Ghosthouse Grenade and Naga Gaga. Bring extra earplugs, 'cause this one is gonna hurt!

Not enough, you say? Well who the fuck are you to tell me what to do?! Oh right, the fans, sorry, my bad. OK, you want more, you got it! The Weekend Wakeup, happening on Sunday, Nov. 14, is a combo of jazz, fusion and electronic music by three great Berklee bands.

Starting things off is Fulla@Sivestre, definitely one of my top picks for the year. The Breicha Quartet is next, an oldie but a goodie, with jazz tunes aplenty. Finally, The Reason, a jazz band with some more eclectic twists steps up to finish the night with style. This show kicks off at 10 p.m. and lasts until 1 the next morning. Sleep is for the weak!

Our last show is still in the booking stages, but that'll end soon. Saturday, Nov. 20, is the date, and the band Gravitas is on the bill. More on this as it develops!

Mountain Rescue, Voodoo Swift and Life on Mars-All Asia, Oct. 10

What better way to end the weekend than by hitting the bars for a few brews and some good tunes?

Mountain Rescue got things going with a great DJ session. The music is tight, flows just right, and leaves you wanting more. Damn 30-minute sets!

Voodoo Swift hail from Plymouth, so big props to them for making the trek! As they say, the only kind of music in their hometown is crappy covers, so they're definitely welcome in Boston. Heavy, pounding notes were the order of the day here, and they were fucking great.

Life on Mars, Mountain Rescue's alter egos, ended the night perfectly, with more pulsing tunes we couldn't get enough of.

Seanyc, Blazzing, Mike Boston, Angel Cakes, Anti_Theory-All Asia, Oct. 9

One hell of an afternoon at the All Asia with an unforgettable hip-hop lineup!

Seanyc and Blazzing were first on stage. Seanyc's got a tight, fast style while Blazzing brings an easy rhythm and flow. Together they blew the crowd away, and got on stage towards the end for an encore performance for some latecomers.

Mike Boston is a true vet of the industry, and his songs were passionate, with a lot to say but nowhere near enough time to say it all. His daughters, the Angel Cakes, are still pretty young, but have amazing talent for kids their age.

Anti_Theory is a good friend of mine, and his style is free as the wind, flowing with the music effortlessly with some classic lines. It's not for everyone, but the hell with those who don't get it, this guy's got such dedication to the music. And let's not forget Odi, who laid out the tracks for the whole night!

Protean Collective 100th show

All I can say is "holy" and "shit," in that order. Protean Collective's 100th show starts and ends with a bang with my favorite band marking their centennial appearance on the stage.

Opening is Avariel, definitely a group to watch for. Lead singer Shannon Kelly's beautiful voice blends seamlessly with the symphonic metal sounds of Michael Rose (Keyboard/Synth, Guitar, Orchestral Score), Jay Narbonne (Drums), Ryan Kelly (Bass Guitar) and Scott McDonald (Guitar, Vocal). They've got power, but there's so much more to what this band does, it only begins with an astonishing stage presence.

Next up are the showstoppers themselves. I've been to a slew of Protean shows, and they never fail to blow me away with their sheer power and skill. Each song has a different vibe to it, some mellow, some at a much faster pace. Matt Zappa (drummer) sets an intense pace, moving as if the sticks are nailed to his hands, while vocalists Steph Goyer and Graham Bacher meld their voices (to say nothing of their prowess with their guitars) while bassist Dan Ehramjian takes hit home with his mad skills.

Citywide Show Report-Alexi Paraschos, Jacob Cuff and Battle Cry Highway

Once more, the All Asia Bar was the sight of an afternoon of great local tunes.

Alexi Paraschos was the first up to bat. He brings a unique energy, whether he was playing his more upbeat tunes or some laidback melodies, he drew the crowd in for the entire set.

Jacob Cuff and the Ones Who Got Away were a late addition to the lineup. Their folk rock tunes had a memorable beat, and I was impressed they were willing making the trip all the way from Maine, but I'm damned glad they did!

Finally, Battle Cry Highway, an old favorite, took the stage to end the show with a bang! An old-school rock band with great rhythm!

It's pretty rare when I can look at a musician and say, with no hesitation, that they "have it." I'm not sure what that "it" is-it could be a unique voice that captures the audience each and every time, or maybe an incredible writing skill. Maybe they're just accomplished hypnotists....

Whatever, Alexi Paraschos has it. I saw him on stage at a show I booked at the All Asia. I had seen a couple videos of his singing, and was thoroughly impressed, but what I saw online was nothing compared to the real thing.

We got a chance to talk before the show. Like most musicians, Alexi's got a laid-back attitude, and he doesn't put on heirs despite the fact that he has a talent I'd give my eyeteeth for. He doesn't take himself to seriously, and he's at home on the stage. He showed me his new idea for marketing his music-selling a 64 gig flash drive with music and photos. A pretty good idea if there every was one.

Alexi's music shifts from fast-paced beats to much slower songs that touch the listener, and it was with regret that I heard him announce his final performance for the show. Though he's got talent to spare, he's so casual and friendly that it's hard to feel intimidated by it. Rather, you feel like you're part of the performance, and it's one I hope to see soon.

Citywide Show Report-Sierra and Andrew, Joakim Brecha, Jill Goldberg

Though the crowd was small, the energy was high at the All Asia on Wednesday, Aug. 18. Sierra and Andrew, who I first saw at Great Scott, poured the emotion from themselves into every song, capturing the audience from the word go.

Joakim Brecha are a new group to me, but with a great jazz style that fit well with the show. Some of the music carries a Swedish influence, and while I'm not sure what that means, I definitely dug it.

Jill Goldberg, on the verge of releasing her second album, finished the evening on a strong note (haha, all laugh). Backed by her band, her rock/folk tunes show she'll go far as a musician.

Grownup Noise EP review

The Lizard Lounge was packed for the Grownup Noise's CD release show last Saturday, so much so that one of my friends had to wait outside, as the club was filled to capacity. Certainly a good sign for this fivesome as they continue their summer/fall tour.

But as they say, 1 million fans can't be wrong. And with music this good, I wouldn't be surprised if the band's fanbase was in the seven figures.

The new album from the Grownup Noise, "Shall We?" gives another taste of the band's laid-back rock style. What I like about this CD is that it's busy-from the drums to the cello to the keyboard, there's a lot happening here, and you find yourself listening to this five-song album over and over to catch it all. It may not rupture my eardrums, but neither does it put me to sleep. Quite the opposite, actually. It's perfect for my long drive to work in the morning.

Vocalist and spokesperson for the big n' tall outlets Paul Hansen once more lends his voice to the music. He's got a relaxing tone, the kind that cuts through all the chatter and babble of the world around you, sort of the reverse of a death metal singer. As I looked around the club during the show, I found not a soul was looking at their cell phone or texting their friends.

I've already run this CD through my player a dozen times, but what the hell. Let's listen again, shall we?

After June's great success at the Hard Rock Boston, Narragansett Beer's New England Americana Summer Series will return for the second of three shows.

Back in February, 34 New England based acts came together for 3 sold out nights at Church (www.churchofboston.com) down in the Fenway area of Boston. With out a dime behind us, our goal was to put on a local, grassroots festival to give like minded artists and fans the opportunity to mingle in effort to try to reignite a musical community that has been somewhat fractonalized (in our opinion) for a number of years now. We'll we're happy to say that it's working. Almost all of the acts are teaming up for shows of their own, sitting in on one another's recordings and sets, and supporting each other by going to shows and spreading the love to their fans and supporters.

Our goal is to continue building the community, energy, and camaraderie throughout the year and beyond. To do this, New England Americana will be presenting shows all around New England with the focus on each local community, reflecting the Greater Boston area's rapidly growing roots music scene. This Summer's lineup at the Hard Rock Cafe features bands that draw from American music's deep heritage in unique ways, often blurring lines between folk, country, rock, blues, gospel, bluegrass, and other styles.

One hell of a night at the Hard Rock Cafe! The first night of the New England Americana Festival (NEAF) saw a huge turnout, well over 250 people. The bands put on an amazing performance, from the energetic and ass-moving sounds of the Whiskey Boys to Eric Royer's one-man band. Big shout-out to the folks from Narragansett Beer for the free drinks! They'll be there at the next two shows in July and August (see previous post for more details).

Citywide Blackout was there, broadcasting live from the club. You can still catch the show by going to the Shows tab on CyberstationUSA.com and going down the list until you find Citywide Blackout. It'll only be archived there for two weeks, so check it out fast! I'll be posting it here when I get a copy.

I talked to John Colvert after the show and he told me the response has been tremendous. And this is only the beginning.

That's right folks, after a 3 night, sold out festival at Church of Boston (www.churchofboston.com) back in February, the New England Americana Community (www.newenglandamericanafestival.com) will return for a Summer Series at the Hard Rock Cafe in the heart of Boston. New Protean CD

Holy crap, it's been a long time! Don't worry, updates will now be done on a much more regular and frequent basis.

The big news for you music fans is the release of the new Protean Collective CD, Divided. I caught the release show last night at the Middle East, and was floored by the band's set. A lot of blood, sweat and beers went into the making of this one, and it all came out with each song, ending with drummer Matt Zappa going Juggernaut on his drum kit. Sure hope he kept the receipt.

On to the CD. Eleven tracks of pure power, some more mellow, all with a heavy dose of emotion. Zappa's drums are an artillery-like assault backing the deep, resonating vocals of Graham Bacher and Steph Goyer, who also play guitar. Dan Ehramjian rounds out the quartet on the bass, adding his skills on the strings to the mix. You'll be moving your head to each song. This CD never gets old-each listen reveals something new, whether it's an everyman-type lyric we can all nod our heads to and say "Yep, same thing happened to me..." or a new note we didn't catch last time. Protean relies on a mix of talents to make it the powerhouse that it is.

Karmic is a full service production company for the independent artist or band of any size. In addition to music recording projects, Karmic is involved with voiceover work, radio ads, music beds, and custom music for corporate training videos.

Jason Labbe is a native to the Boston area. He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist whose vocation includes Saxophone, Guitar, and Drums. Peter Bertrand started playing drums at the age of fifteen and found a passion in rhythm. This passion has transcended into learning the guitar, and honing his songwriting skills. Over time his unique sound has evolved, which Peter calls “Percussive Soul” a style not easily described but is best heard. Peter’s lyrics are just as personal, with much of his musical inspiration stemming from Western Massachusetts; Peter’s music is unique, expressive, and as fresh as they come. Kevin GriffinKobie Ali is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist originally from Washington, DC. In 2006 Kobie moved north and has been rocking Boston ever since. His music is filled with a mix of funk, rock, jazz, and soul influences. Currently he is fronting Lovesexy, New England's only tribute to the music of Prince. He has enjoyed successful performances at Harpers Ferry, Copperfield’s, Church, along with interviews and live performances at Curry College.

Corey Road is an honest rock band with a unique sound all their own. With driving rock rhythms, plaintive ballads, soulful grooves, and resounding hope, Corey Road explores the pains and ecstasies of love, the confusions of modern life, and the isolation shared by so many artists before them. Their live performances are expressive and passionate. Simply put, with a catchy melodies and a great beat this rock band will captivate audiences everywhere.

Mariami Bibilouri takes influences from R&B, Jazz, Hip-Hop and various International genres. Her keen attention to lyrical detail and melody is intelligible, yet her compositions are simple, sexy and inspiring. Her backing musicians provides additional dynamic elements that helps elevate her music to a plateau that is not seen in today’s commercial music. Their live shows are charged with electricity, passion, and unmistakable talent. The dynamic energy has audiences feeling inspired, lifted and wanting more. Hey all, just wanted to give a couple updates on some of the great artists I've seen as of late.

Last Thursday at the Cantab Lounge, I caught a great raggae show put on by Rasta People Promotions. Kallilah, Jahfritte, King-I and Nomad-I. An amazing night of tunes, and you can expect photos and videos on my Facebook and MySpace sites soon.

Last night, I caught a show at Church, one of my favorite clubs in the city. My top act for the night-T.A.S.T.E., who brought a whole new rythm and flow to the place. I was able to meet with the manager Andy, and you can expect them on the show in the near future.

"Manager at the Mic"
The start of the new year gives every band a chance to assess what they have accomplished in the past year and set goals for the upcoming one. This is a great time to "get your house" in order. Here's my list of 7 items to check in on (I'm sick of Top 10 lists):

1) Review your web properties. MySpace, website, FaceBook group, Ourstage, Reverb Nation, AirPlay Direct, SonicBids etc. Where-ever you have a web presence - review it and get it up-to-date with current materials. Go a level higher and setup your sites so you enter tour data only once and "push" it to other sites by using RSS feeds wherever possible.

2) Recompile your press kit. Review your "One-sheet" and other press materials. Make sure you have current CD or gig reviews.

3) Festival booking - now is the time to apply to festivals. You can use the "Musician's Atlas" http://www.musiciansatlas.com/

4) Update your Music Industry Contacts - People move around - don't lose track of your industry friends. Same as above

5) Email key industry contacts (using the above) and update them on your career. This should be done quarterly. Booking Agents, Labels, Managers, Publicists - whomever it is you need - reach out to them so they remember you. Keep it brief, upbeat and friendly.

6) Look at the upcoming year by quarters and set realistic goals for each. This becomes the basis for your business plan for the year. For example - if you intend to self-release a new CD lay out your schedule. 1st quarter - pre-production, rehearsals, select studio, select Producer (where applicable). 2nd quarter - record, mix, master, album artwork, select promoters for press and radio. 3rd quarter - pre-release reviews, CD manufacture, CD release, promotion. 4th quarter - tour behind release, secure further reviews.

7) Even if you have touring included in your answer to #6 above - make sure to review your touring routes and frequency. You must service brand new markets every 3 - 4 months and your established markets 2 - 3 times a year.
